Types of AC Units

Since our earliest history the basic concept of air conditioner has been in use. The Egyptians used the process of evaporation to cool rooms by hanging wet reeds on windows. The Romans cooled their buildings by circulating water through the walls. In 1902, Willis Carrier invented the first modern air conditioner using refrigerant. Here is a description of some of the common AC units in use today.

1. Window Air Conditioner

Because of their simplicity, the most common AC units are the window air conditioners. Mounted on walls and windows, they are otherwise known as room air conditioners. They are made up of a casing that contains all the parts of the air conditioner. There are two segments to the window air conditioner, the front section that cools the room and the outdoor section that releases absorbed heat into the atmosphere. Previously the front panel was controlled manually, but now it is controlled by a digital touch panel or a remote. The direction of the airflow can be selected with an adjustable louvre.

2. Split Air Conditioning System

Split air conditioning is another common system, popular for their elegance and silent operation. The split air conditioner consists of two units, an outside one and an inside one, just as with the window air conditioner. They are both connected by wires and tubing. The compressor, condenser coil and the capillary tubing are contained in the outside unit, while the cooling coil blower and air filter are in the inside unit. The difference between air split conditioners and the rest of the conditioners is that they do not need major installation.

3. Ductless Mini-Split Systems

As with the rest of the conditioners, the ductless mini-split system has the same type of components, the inside air handling units, the outside condenser unit as well as the connecting refrigerant coolant lines which pass through a small hole drilled in the wall.  As a result of their assembly, the ductless units are less susceptible to air leakage and other security problems. The main advantage of these types of units is that they are smaller and versatile to use in individual rooms for zoning, heating or cooling. Compared with other air conditioning systems, however, they have poor energy efficiency.

4. Central Air Conditioning

The central air conditioner is a control system for air in an enclosed space through a supply and return air flow system. The system releases cool air through the supply ducts to the living space. The warmer air returns through the return ducts back to the system. The consistency of maintaining temperatures throughout the house is one of the main advantages of central air conditions. The system, however, can consume high energy if cooling a lot of rooms.

“The team at Kings Heating is the one you hope for whenever you’re needing home services! The level of integrity and care they exhibit, unfortunately, seems to be existing less and less these days. Erin, Gary, Michaela, & Brent are nothing short of amazing! Please know that you’ll be in great hands whenever you’re working with Kings.”
