Snow and Your HVAC System

Did you get your wish for a snowy winter season? If there’s one thing that can create a festive atmosphere it is snow through the holiday times. However, when it comes to your HVAC system there are some things you need to think about, especially if you have a heat pump.

While some of these tips are directed at keeping your utility bills low, others are intended to keep you and your family safe.

Advise for heat pump owners

  • Snow and ice build-up can cause potential blocked drainage and air restriction so be sure to avoid having your heat unit installed directly on the ground.
  • Planting shrubbery will be a great help for blocking strong winds. Remember to allow two feet clearance for proper airflow and for service calls.
  • You have no cause for alarm when your heat pump goes into defrost mode. It will reverse its operation for a short time so that warm air can be diverted to melt any snow and ice that may have accumulated on your outdoor equipment. This defrost cycle is perfectly normal and should not last too long.
  • If you regularly experience extreme cold you should consider combining your heat pump with a gas furnace. This gives you the option of using the most fuel-efficient source for the current temperature.

Advise for gas furnace owners

  • Exhaust pipes must be kept clear of snow and debris. Make sure your flue is not blocked by the waste material produced by your furnace during operation.

General advice

  • Do not be tempted to radically raise the temperature in your home. Not only will this fail to warm your home more quickly, it will increase your utility bills and may even damage your unit.
  • Schedule your annual maintenance appointment to make sure that your heat pump or gas furnace is ready for the cold season. If it has snowed or iced outside before your appointment, make sure your walkway is clear. It will be greatly appreciated by your contractor.

Remember to schedule your annual HVAC system maintenance appointment with Kings Heating and Air Conditioning in Lynnwood. We’ll make sure you’re ready for anything winter can throw at you.

“The team at Kings Heating is the one you hope for whenever you’re needing home services! The level of integrity and care they exhibit, unfortunately, seems to be existing less and less these days. Erin, Gary, Michaela, & Brent are nothing short of amazing! Please know that you’ll be in great hands whenever you’re working with Kings.”

Highly recommended to use for any heating and AC work.”
