“Why should I consider installing a Ductless Heat Pump in my home?” is a question we frequently answer.
Seattle City Light is offering a $1,200 rebate to qualifying homeowners who install a ductless heat pump. Why? Seattle City Light offers rebates to help customers save electricity because it is the most cost-effective way to meet our future energy needs. When customers reduce their electricity use, it helps them avoid the expense of building new power plants or buying electricity on the open market.
A ductless heat pump is unlike a regular heat pump. Ductless heat pumps (DHPs) operate without ductwork, eliminating potential loss of energy from leaky or unsealed ducts. They are an appropriate substitute for electric baseboards or wall heaters. A ductless heat pump system consists of one unit per room or area, and a compressor unit outside. Heating and cooling can be the largest electricity expense in your home. For moderate climates, using a ductless heat pump instead of your baseboard or wall heaters can save you money and electricity, while keeping you comfortable.
Benefits of ductless heat pumps
- Save energy and reduce monthly expenses. They can lower heating costs by 25-50% compared to standard electric heating systems
- Reduce noise and increase comfort. Using ultra-quiet fans that evenly circulate air, eliminating hot and cold spots in rooms.
- You can heat or cool individual rooms – each controlled by its own thermostat
- Better air quality. With a built-in air filter it can improve air quality.
- Easy to use. Most units can be controlled by wireless remote control
- Easy Installation. The indoor and outdoor units are connected by a small bundle of cables including refrigerant line. These cables only require a 3 inch hole in the wall for installation.
Rebate eligibility
- Home must be located in the Seattle City Light service area (Other counties offer rebates too).
- The home’s primary heat source must be electric zone heat, such as baseboards, Cadet or King Wall Heaters or electric hydronic baseboard heaters (Ducted heating systems are not eligible).
Ductless Systems have 3 main parts
- An indoor unit mounted on a wall
- An outdoor unit that sits on the ground
- A remote control that controls the unit
How a Heat Pump works
A heat pump transfers heat using refrigerant expansion and compression within a cycle… What does that mean? It means it takes cold air and makes it warm and takes warm air and makes it cold, when you want it and where you want it!
In addition to lowering your heating bill and providing air conditioning, adding a ductless system increases the flexibility of your home’s heating system. You can install Ductless System in your main living area and keep existing heating system in place to ensure your bedrooms and bathrooms remain at the desired temperature even on the coldest days.
