Common Heat Pump Questions Answered

Have heat pump questions? We have answers.

We understand how overwhelming it can be to get all the information you need about the different heating and air conditioning systems available. Your home comfort levels and the amount of money you spend heating and cooling your home could be impacted by the many different systems and features. Today we want to look specifically at heat pumps and try to answer your heat pump questions.

Here are some of the most common question asked about heat pumps.

1. What does a heat pump look like?

It is quite hard to distinguish the difference between heat pumps and air conditioners because they look precisely the same.

2. How do I know if I have a heat pump?

Have a look at your thermostat to see if it has an ‘emergency heat’ setting or you can search online by the model number. These are the simplest ways to tell if you have a heat pump, alternatively you can ask a contractor.

3. How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump works exactly the same as an air conditioner, however, besides the cooling mode, the heat pump can reverse the flow of refrigerant to provide heating.  This heat transfer system is more efficient than an air conditioner with backup heating strips.

3. What size heat pump do I need?

As with all heating and cooling systems your specific needs will determine the size you require.  Your contractor should do a manual J load calculation to determine the correct size for your home.

4. How much does a heat pump cost?

Heat pump costs vary according to size and your needs. Make sure you get several quotes from different contractors. A heat pump is a big investment and you need to make sure it is installed correctly so don’t cut corners when it comes to contractors.  Remember cheaper is not always the best way to go.

5. What is a defrost cycle?

When ice forms on the outdoor components of your heat pump on really cold days it will start the defrost cycle. What happens is that your heat pump will go into air conditioning mode in order to thaw the ice.  It may seem alarming at first, but it is completely normal.

We had our furnace maintenance scheduled and inspected in no time, received notifications during the process and final invoice right after. Too easy! Highly recommended to use for any heating and AC work.”

“The team at Kings Heating is the one you hope for whenever you’re needing home services! The level of integrity and care they exhibit, unfortunately, seems to be existing less and less these days. Erin, Gary, Michaela, & Brent are nothing short of amazing! Please know that you’ll be in great hands whenever you’re working with Kings.”
